It’s a raid

I am well into the home stretch this time around, and I can’t help but reminisce. It was in early 2008 that I decided I would try Age of Conan. I pre-ordered my Collector’s Edition and started playing on release. I tried a number of classes. I confess, I found the slight change in combat mechanics a little off-putting, but continued with my “main”, a Tempest of Set, into the 60′s. After about 20 levels of killing wolves and doing the dreaded “Villa Quests”, and three months in, I canceled my subscription. The game had some technical issues as well as a boring 40+ game. I’d spent all but about 5 levels of my 61 levels solo, which for some gamers might be normal, but I’m a social gamer, I love my company, and if I wanted to solo I’d play my Wii.

So I left AoC and tried some other games, and sadly found them lacking. I decided to try AoC again, some 9 months later, and found a vastly different game. I’m about to celebrate a 4 month “return to Conan” anniversary, and I’m not the least bit bored. I’ve found a game that has a range of gaming options, good performance, a healthy community, the most awesome graphics I could hope for, and I now have my highest character, a level 71 Priest, as well as a 38 Guardian.

I’m enjoying everything about AoC right now. My Guardian alt is providing me with a great alternative to my priest. I’ve had the joy of tanking in Black Castle twice now, a serious tanking role, and I haven’t played a tank for a good few years now. I’m absolutely loving my Guardian, and I think I’m doing a pretty decent job as a tank. No thanks to my ub3r skillz but rather a class and spec option that works.

And since my main is now 71 I was invited to do a Kylikki raid run. I’ve never really done any end-game raiding in the past. Sure, EQ2 had raid mobs at various levels and I put together many a group to tackle those, but serious end-game raiding is something that never appealed to me. So what did I think of AoC’s raiding? Pretty boring actually. We spent as much time determining every member’s role in tackling each mob, every time, as it took to kill the thing. So, 5 minutes of planning for each mob, and I mean “each” mob, followed by 5 minutes combat. Then, 10 minutes to rest and plan for the next mob. I seriously question the passion for raiding, considering how few “need” items drop for players. But that’s another topic altogether.

But back to the point at hand. AoC is a fantastic game. I’ve played, maybe 15, 16, even 20 MMOG’s, and while sometimes I consider myself to be some kind of old school, harcore, gamer, I still consider myself a bit of a nub. But with all the MMORPG’s I’ve played, AoC is up there with the best. Awesome, and I mean awesome, graphics; great quest delivery, plenty of dungeons; if you gave up on the game back in 2008 you should try it again, you’ll be blown away.

Just one word…RAID!!
I just did my first raid this morning. Yakhmar myself. We wiped, but I do not care, it is my FIRST EVAH!!
But, like you, I was saying…Well, it is ok…lol.
But, guess we need time to see if it is worth it or not.
But, there is no doubt, of all the MMO’s, this one finally has me strapped in, and hopefully I can keep it going, as I plan to do a few more raids.
Otherwise, I will level up my ToS, and see how that goes.
I may even…GASP …PvP…hehe

Don’t worry about th eslowness of raiding right now… After some time, you will be chain pulling them like demons. We did Kylikki last night and pulling the groups as a whole, we took about 15 minutes to get to the Champion of th eHonourguard and then abnother 20 to get to Kylikki…

Raiding can be fun with experienced groups.
