When the WAR is over
My Warhammer subscription finally expired, but I did manage to get one more look in before that happened. I logged in on my Bright Wizard, worked through some quests and queued up for some scenarios. The BW still pwns in RVR and I find it pretty easy to play. The only classes I really need worry about are the melee classes. Tanks have a tendency to run straight for me when they spot me, but they don’t do enough damage to take me down quickly and with my 10 second AoE stun I can get away from them easily enough. Mauraders, Choppas, and Witch Elves, are a different story and can be deadly, especially if two of them come for me. But again, I can drop the stun if it’s up and get away, and then some other BW will burn them down.
I didn’t play my BW very long, just enough to get a level, do a couple of scenarios and then I was done. I’ve complained before that the questing in WAR is just plain boring, so I didn’t spend too much time with that, and while scenarios are fun, I have no desire to spend hours and hours doing those. And there was nothing compelling me to hit the Open RvR lakes. I would have to head there, hope to join a warband that’s actually doing something like assaulting a keep, and hope to be on the winning side so I can get XP and Renown points, as well as a chance for some loot. I could spend an hour in the lakes and get nothing. Or I can quest and queue up scenarios and get tons of XP and renown that way. Mythic has released another patch which includes some much needed incentives for participating in ORvR, and I imagine that this will appeal to those in Tier 4 who are wondering right about now what the point of it all was.
There’s been a shortage of healers so I thought I’d take the cobwebs off my Archmage, who is still level 8. After the selfish, self-centered play style of the BW, running around on my AM trying to keep everyone alive while being a favourite target of everyone on the other side quickly lost its appeal.
I decided to try another class and made a Shadow Warrior. I didn’t like the look of this class at all. The animations were terrible and it felt like I was watching a really bad cartoon rather than playing an MMO. I didn’t feel connected to the character at all; nothing felt right about this class and I gave up on it quickly. I moved on to a Witch Hunter and struggled through the quests, which I’d previously done on my BW and they weren’t that good the first time. I did get a few levels so I could try it out in RvR. After the ease with which I killed stuff on my BW, the WH was hard to play and I was getting some serious pwnage and I was reminded of one reason why I canceled my WAR sub. Winning is fun. Being competitive is fun. Getting your ass handed to you and spending most of your play time watching the respawn countdown is the pits.
So that’s it for me and WAR. I’ll probably revisit this game sometime down the track, as I tend to do with MMO’s anyway, but for now I’m thoroughly enjoying Age of Conan and just can’t justify maintaining a sub for WAR. The games not terrible, it’s a good enough game and one which I did play solidly for 5 months and half-hearted for another two, but it’s no longer engaging enough for me.
