Busy going to WAR

26 August, 2008 (02:49) | All, Warhammer

Openedge over at Simple Complexities mentions how the blog world has gone tepid and that talk of WAR is slowing down.  I’m definitely guilty of not blogging lately but one needs to take into account where I get my inspiration from.  I’m just not clever enough to come up with things off the top of my head.

One main source of inspiration is the games themselves, particularly the one I happen to be playing, and currently I’m not playing anything.  My Age of Conan account has expired, and while I still have some time left on my Sony Station Account, I’ve decided to detox on MMO’s for the next few weeks in anticipation for Warhammer.  I’ve been playing MMO’s back to back for a while now and a short break will do me good.  And I actually don’t feel like playing any of the other MMO’s I have anyway.  They all feel a bit stale and I’m revved up for WAR now and that’s all I want to play.

Usually I get to read a few blogs and that’ll often give me something to comment on, but I’ve been so busy lately I haven’t even done that.  In fact, this is the first chance I’ve had to look at blogs for about a week.

I’ve been working on our prospective WAR guild, Arha Khaladh, and that has given me something to do other than game, while still keeping me excited about gaming.  This weekend I advertised the guild on a few of the WAR fansites; Warhammer Alliance, Only-War, and the WAR forums at Ten Ton Hammer.  The Warhammer Alliance site has gotten the most interest by a long margin, with three or four times the number of views as the other two, and our ads have started to attract a few people and subsequently a few members.  We’re still more than three weeks away from launch and I have to say I’m happy with the attention the guild’s getting.  I’d expect as we get closer to launch we should see even more visitors to the site.

Exciting times ahead.

Woot…
Looks like the guild will rock. Hope all goes well.
I think the WAR news has settled down from the explosive arguments, I think is what I meant to say, and should have stated as such. The back and forth of the “WAR is the second Jesus” to “Kool aid is good at SOE” talk, it all got outrageous.
I certainly changed my posting habits after the mess of the WAR NDA drop.
I really do hope WAR is good, and I think it will be for large guilds and grouping. For myself where I play in small groups or just my wife, it may not be the ticket…especially with the slow combat feel I keep seeing and reading about.
Luckily I can live vicariously through you and the other bloggers (like Casualties) and hope you guys all have fun..

Cheers mate!

As you well know I’m yet to experience WAR first hand, but the news of the “slow combat” is good news to my ears. I much prefer a more tactical style of combat than the explosive type found in Age of Conan. I’ve put more faith and more hope in WAR than any other game I can remember, which is reflected in my creation of a pre-release guild. This time it truly is a long way to fall and a fall that will really hurt me. I’m counting on WAR delivering.

Hrm…in my brief preview, I didn’t get a feeling that the combat was “slow.” It was more of a feeling of familiarity for me. It is not revolutionary combat by any stretch, but I’m kinda with Cal in that it works for me. The animations are very vanilla as is, and there were pathing issues for some of the mobs. Pathing can be fixed, and I imagine it will be fairly soon. The animations–well I dont’ know anything about game design and what that entails, but I would hope they could add in some variety later. I don’t mind the old “button mash” approach at all, as it’s what I’m used to from other games. I didn’t understand the upset over cool-down timers. In EQ2 some of the CA’s have really long cool-downs at higher levels. A 2 second cool-down is reasonable to me, at lower levels. My only beef was that so many arts were on that (would it be universal?) same timer. I’d hope that would be fixed. Either way, I managed to solo very well playing a pure dps class with no healing.

And I’m very excited about the guild. Cal’s done a lot of work on the site and it looks great. :) Now we just need to get playing and meet some people!
