The price of WAR

13 August, 2008 (02:37) | All, Warhammer

I was strolling past my local EB Games store today and couldn’t help but notice the wall of Warhammer:  Age of Reckoning pre-order display boxes.  So I entered the store, walked right past the Warhammer display, and started to browse through the other titles they had.  After about 45 seconds I went and played with the Warhammer boxes.  Now before I continue, let me put something in perspective for you, remembering that I’m in Australia.

  • $1 AUD = 0.875702 USD
  • $1 AUD = 0.587522 EUR

Ok, so I’m holding the standard edition game box in my hand and it has a shelf price of $99.  Ouch.  The Age of Conan SE cost $79 and the Collector’s Edition $109.  So I go to the counter, merely to enquire about pre-ordering.  I ask the sales person about any Collector’s Edition, seeing as how there was no mention of it over by the display.  Firstly he tells me he doesn’t know much about WAR and he’ll check his little computer.  Dude, WTF.  How can you not know anything about WAR?  I’m sure he can tear up the stage in Guitar Hero 3, but surely someone even remotely in the games industry would have a working knowledge of the product they sell.  Anyway, after a time he tells me that yes, it appears they will have CE’s as well, so I ask him how much that’ll be.  Do you know what he tells me?  Wait for it.  $149.  OMG DUDE WTF…. $149.

That seems like an aweful lot for the CE.  I actually expected EA Mythic to charge a higher monthy fee and was surprised to see they were sticking with $14.99.  So now that I know what the price is for WAR in Australia I have even more to ponder.  Though I expect I’m just going to pre-order the CE in the end anyway.  Damn you EA Mythic *shakes fist*

This is easy
Funcom located in Oslo, Norway, Mythic located in Virginia…Good ole USA. The European market is much stronger than the US market right now.

Welcome to the Recession…ARGH! (stupid US Dollar)

Tell me about it. To further add to insult, the price for 1 month sub to VG is US $15. Somehow, and don’t ask me how, that equated to AUD $21.90. Now that truly is a WTF!!!

Wow. That is a huge price. My EBG guy told me that they’d sold out of the CE so I didn’t bother asking the price.

Your subscription should drop a bit when the Aussie dollar gets closer to parity with the US$. I’ve noticed on my credit card bill over the last couple of months that my US$14.95 subscriptions have been costing me around A$16. For some reason the Aussie has dropped back to 87 cents over the last week. I’m not sure if that’s temporary or a trend.

I’m not sure how SOE works out their pricing *shrugs*. It doesn’t bother me that much, if the games worth playing for another month it’s worth subscribing too, but $149 for the Ce does seem a bit rich. I’ve never known any other game, MMO or single player, to ask that much.

Hrm….at the current rates of US dollars, I think this is going to end up costing me $1.794.235.16. or something like that. *wink*

Seriously, that is way steep for a CE, and $99 is way steep for a standard version. I want to try the game, but yikes. I’m just going to wait til it hits the shelves more than likely.

I am waiting on the blogosphere to render a verdict first. I would look at forums also, but Mythic has left those out…and good thing, as we can see from the AoC forum PvP system (Called Forum Sieges…i.e: Troll Wars)
So, see…you GOTTA go buy it so I can make a decision (lol)

Well, I can’t argue with that logic. Guess I’m off to the store.

*grins* You know I always want the collectors additions. I love the extra stuff. This is how I justify the extra expense *says to self*…. “You’d spend more money on a night out”. This justification works well for me most times. Try it for yourself, although I must say, after the AoC debate re: CE or no CE (which I won *grins*), you know we’ll be getting the CE more then likely, lol. luv sis :)

I live in Melbourne Australia and had the exact same problem you just described with EBGames. The plot thickens though… Did you actually try and pre-order? When I pre-ordered the EBGames (after they took my money) the guy tells me that they no longer give out pre-order packs. I was like WTF dude?? He said you had to pre-order before the end of July to receive a pre-order pack. I then asked, what was the point of me just pre-ordering then?? He said, that EBGames will call me when the game is available. I then asked, what is the point if I can’t actually play in the head program only available to pre-order customers?? He said he didn’t know. I asked him to get the manager. The manager didn’t even have the first clue as to what WAR was. I had to explain it all to him, only to receive a shrug from my question about the pre-ordering. So not only to I have to pay the overpriced amount for WAR, I also miss out on the pre-order advantages because the guys at EBGames are a bunch of tards.

I would love to say that I will never buy another game from them, but what other choices are there in Australia??

The guys at EB are a bunch of tards, you’re exactly right. They have no idea about any of the games they have, particularly the MMO genre. I went to pick up Tabula Rasa on release day from EB. I hadn’t pre-ordered,thought I’d grab it off the shelf. When I went in there weren’t any on the shelf. I ask the guy about them and he has no idea what I’m talking about. Hasn’t even heard of the game. I tell him it released today (2 Nov) and he checks his ‘puter, and surprise, he’s got ‘em out the back.

When I got my collector’s edition of Age of Conan home and unwrapped I found it didn’t even have the game disks in the box. Had to go back the next day to pick them up.

EB Games = tards.

I actually made it into another EB Games today and the guy there wasn’t as big a tard as the other one. He told me they didn’t have anymore CE’s but I could pre-order the SE. No big deal. If I want a CE I can check out GAME or Harvey Norman, or try just ordering from Gamestop in the US, that’s where I got Pirates of the Burning Sea from.

The thing that did bug me though was the release date they had of 23rd September. I told him it was the 18th but he is still an employee of EB Games and therefore still a tard.

This is from the Warhammer Herald.

“the simultaneous launch of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning across North America, Europe, and the Oceanic region on September 18th”

Someone at EB Games need to sort their shit out.

Well, I got my hot little hands on my preorder today from Best Buy. I was going to wait til it went live, but somehow I got caught up in all the pre-release fervor. /blame_caliga Just kidding. I’m actually really looking forward to this game now, and hoping it will be a fun, new adventure. I only got the regular, non-special, vanilla edition, though. Best Buy had about 6 of them on the shelf when I went in, but you could see that they had had more previously, because there was a bit of empty space on WAR’s little section of the shelving.

Now, I have to decide what to play….
