Sanctum of the Burning Souls … and a rhino

12 June, 2008 (03:16) | Age of Conan, All

Sanctum of the Burning Souls is a dungeon located in the Wild Lands of Zeleta.  I had yet to go there, having only just started adventuring in the Wild Lands in the search for new quests.  It is quite a popular place for groups and I saw a lot of requests for them in the region’s chat channel.  I decided to try my hand at getting a group and it wasn’t long before I was heading in with my party of new found friends.  This was my first opportunity to be in a full group and test out the Tempest of Set in a group environment.

Mobs range from 37-39 which I assume are epic because I can’t solo them, with boss mobs of level 39.  The bosses are pretty tough and take a while to bring down.  Sanctum itself is huge, with giant stairways leading up higher and higher through the dungeon.  It looks epic in size and the graphics are superb.

I ended up doing six runs through Sanctum throughout the day (it was a big day) in various groups.  Three times our groups had three healers, myself as a Temple of Set, and two Priest of Mitra.  I wonder if this reflects the popularity of the Priest of Mitra class?  On one occasion I was the only healer and it was crazy, frantic, utter madness; but hell it was fun.  I think we only had one group wipe out of all six runs, and we lost a couple of squishies along the way, including myself who went down after two hits from a boss, I didn’t even have time to hit a spell.  After a day in Sanctum I managed to get a nice helm which is ideal for Tempests and a nice hammer.  There was a really nice tunic which I was hoping to get but alas I missed out.  I’ll be going back for it though I can assure you.

It takes a bit over an hour to do a run through Sanctum.  I buffed up at the start of our run and remember having to hold the group to rebuff a little way before the final boss, so 70 minutes is probably enough time to allocate to a run.  There’s also a bunch of quests you can get for there, though some are spread out and hard to find.  Still, it gives you an excuse to go back.  A cheerio to the guys at Ten Ton Hammer.  I was grouped with Strivas, a Dark Templar from your guild, and he represented you well.

So six runs through Sanctum gained me some loot and took me from levels 36 to most of the way into 39.  I logged in the next day, headed to the noble district where a spent about 30 mins grinding level 42 mobs in order to ding level 40.  And with it came my Killer Rhino Mount.  RAWWWR!!

Yeah, Strivas is a good guy. :) He was in our TTH group Tuesay night as well. That was the first time I’d done the Sanctum and it was great to have a guild group do it.

It looks like you’re right on my heals too… pass me up today no doubt. ;)

I think works going to slow me down, I had two days off and the wife was out of town so I played for about 15 hrs :)

I was happy to see they increased the rhino’s jogging speed in the latest patch also, needed to be done.

Grats…
I got the Mammoth…but of course no reason to use it…yet..

I will be doing my first Sanctum runs tonight…so I am excited..
Myself being a DT, should be interesting…as I believe one thing AoC does right is group dynamics…the variations can be quite fun..
I have grouped with a Bear Shaman, Tempest and a Barbarian…and we all had successes…
So, the holy triumvirate of the standard MMO (Tank/Heals/AoE) is not a requirement…I like that.

For a lot of the content you can get away with just about anything in a group. I don’t think I’d like to go into Sanctum without a tank, you do get a lot of adds. No doubt you’ve found out by now already. But seeing as how all the priests can do some damage and bring something to the table other than just heals, it doesn’t impact so greatly on the group if you have that “third” healer.
