MMO Gamers

Yay!  After a 600+ mb patch I’m finally in the wonderful world of Hyboria.  After having a couple of attempts at the character creation I finally made a character I was happy with.  I’d spent a bit of time researching the classes over the last few weeks and decided on a Tempest of Set (ToS).  I also tried a Dark Templar, but by the time I’d gotten him to level five I wanted to go back and play my Tempest.

And I think that the characters in Age of Conan are the best I’ve seen in an MMO.  They look truly awesome and I wish I was as buff as my ToS.  Lots of hot looking chicks running around Tortage as well.  In fact, I’d say that there are a disproportionately large number of women in Tortage.  Are we seeing more girl gamers?  Methinks no.

You can’t fault the graphics in this game, everything looks great.  I usually steer away from cloth wearing classes for a couple of reasons.  Firstly, they can’t take a hit.  This is offset by them being the biggest damage dealers usually.  Secondly, and the main reason, I hate the look of robes.  But that’s not the case in AoC.  The armour looks great, with lots of detail, and there’s no shame in running around trying to act tough in a dress.  The developers have truly captured the Conan look.

Performance wise I’ve only had one random disconnect in five straight hours of playing, and that could’ve been a problem at my end.  I’m yet to find any incomplete, broken, or bugged quests but this is only Tortage so it’s too early to judge.  I might need to upgrade my graphics card though.  I’m running an 8600GT and I’ve had to turn shadows off and reflections down in order to get a FPS over 40.  With those turned on I’m hovering around the 20 FPS mark.  Again, I wonder if this will get worse once I’m past level 20 and have joined the wider community.  I’d be interested to hear what sort of performance other people are getting and with what cards.

My ToS is currently level 13 and I expect to get a couple of big sessions in this week so I should crack the 20 mark by the weekend.  My sister’s copy arrived in the mail today so I expect she’s playing as I write this, or at least installing it, so hopefully she’ll catch up and we can hit the 20 mark together.
